The award-winning building was the first Australian building designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry and was the flagship of UTS’s billion-dollar-plus City Campus Master Plan.
Project challenges
The 12-storey building required up to 7.5m-deep excavations. There was a heritage sewer, which could not be disturbed, on one of the site boundaries. A JK Environment investigation found a number of contamination issues including leakage from two old underground storage tanks. There was also an igneous dyke rock formation crossing below the site.
Our solutions
JK Geotechnics completed three stages of geotechnical investigation. We monitored the drilling of shoring piles through the igneous dyke as well as shoring system deflections. JK Environment removed the underground storage tanks and installed a network of groundwater monitoring wells around the site.
